Cable Internet FAQ – Everything You Need to Know About Cable Internet

Take the Confusion out of Cable - Cable Internet FAQ

With the many plans and services out there, cable internet services can be confusing compared to DSL and satellite services.  You may be left feeling confused with all the information online about cable internet services.  These tips and tricks take the guess work out of cable internet and how you can make it work for you.

How Does Cable Internet Work?

If you are confused about the in’s and out’s of cable internet, it helps to have a basic understanding of cable TV.  A cable modem is a digital modem that uses a coaxial cable connection (which is the same line for cable TV) for the data. This data connection is then received by the modem and then decodes the signal into your computer.  This cable line is filtered and separate from the rest of the cable TV lines in your house.

Is Cable Internet Secure?

You don’t have to worry because cable internet is just as secure as dial-up and DSL connections.  The best thing to do is keep your passwords long and include both letters and numbers.  You also need to turn off any service that you absolutely don’t need to run. You should also make sure to download firewall protection and virus software to ensure your network as secure and safe as possible.

Can I increase my Cable Internet Speed?

There are ways you can increase your cable internet speed.  You can check with your provider to see if they offer faster speeds or you can fix the windows registry yourself, which seems to help. If you want to test your speed, download a large file and see how long it takes to download.  Then make the changes to the windows registry and then test it again to see if there’s an improvement in speed.

Can I hook up my television to the same line as the cable modem?

It’s not recommended but it can be done.  You can install a splitter in the wall jack and sometimes it will work fine off the splitter.  However, there may be cable systems that won’t work with a splitter.
